How is it With My Soul?

How to use this guide.

“Come to me all you who are weary and burdened with heavy things

and I will give you rest.” – Jesus, Matthew 11:28

This devotional guide is produced on a weekly basis as a gift to you. At Bethesda UMC we believe that a life spent following Jesus is the best life we could ever live. One of our three aims is to be a community that lives by faith in Jesus. One way that we do that is by committing time each and every day to read scripture and pray. Our prayer is that through the practice of daily prayer and scripture reading you will become grounded in Jesus and over time begin to live more like Jesus lived.

The key to any devotional habit is to practice it regularly. Here are a few tips to develop this habit if it isn’t one for you yet.

  • Decide that it is worth it and commit to making it stick
  • Set up a place that is your “devotional place.” Make it comfortable and well lit. Grab coffee or water. Leave a Bible, a pen, and this guide in that place.
  • Set an alarm. Choose a time each day that is specifically set aside for this practice and set an alarm to remind you
  • Reward yourself. Buy a bag of small chocolate squares or whatever your heart desires; physically practice the words from Psalm 34:8, “Taste and see that the Lord is good.” This small reward will pale in comparison to the greater reward of a growing relationship with Jesus.
  • Believe you can succeed in this. Fear and doubt will quickly rush in when we try and move closer to Jesus. Know that this is normal and you will move past it.
